State audit orders former Alexandria official to repay $201,153

Newark Advocate

A state audit of the village of Alexandria, released Tuesday, orders former fiscal officer Laura Vanscoy Andrews to repay the village $201,153 for checks written to herself, money stolen from deposits and payments lacking supporting documentation.

Vanscoy Andrews, found guilty in November of theft in office, tampering with records, and dereliction of duty, received a sentence of four years in prison, as well as ordered to pay $167,004 in restitution and a $10,500 fine.

The audit showed Vanscoy Andrews wrote herself 240 checks, totaling $194,914, from 2009 through 2015. She disguised the checks as payments to vendors…

State Auditor Dave Yost said, “This fiscal officer’s abuse of power was toxic to the village of Alexandria. Her prison sentence is a well-deserved punishment for the seven years she spent ripping off the community.”
